The War Against Food

We are in a war.  Have you noticed?  It’s a war that has been waged on our food.  It started back in the 1950s with the introduction of the TV dinner; picked up steam in the 1960s with introduction of fast food restaurant chains; and went completely viral in the 1970s, 80s and 90s processed GMO (genetically modified organisms) foods.  Now today we can see the effects of years of war and our lack of training and organization that has led to a nationwide epidemic of diabetes, heart disease, kidney and liver disease and colon cancer.

Whoa!  What happened?  As a nation we became fat, dumb and happy when it came to food.  We started accepting all kinds of laboratory creations in place of real food.  It has finally progressed to a point where some of our children, rich or poor, have never had anything but fast food.  They literally don’t know what it’s like to eat food that hasn’t been processed with GMO sugars, soy products, addictive food additives and known carcinogens.

The giant food industrial complex has grown into a mammoth machine which has practically taken over our agricultural industry forcing farmers into contracts to plant GMO crops.  If the farmers try to reverse this direction, they are sued and bullied until they acquiesce or go bankrupt.

From the looks of it, we the people are losing the war.  What can we do to stop this course, turn things around and start winning some battles.

  1. We can insist on better food labeling which includes identification of GMOs and known carcinogens.  There’s no reason for this stuff to be in our food supply.
  2. We can educate our children about how to eat healthy, fresh food.
  3. We can educate our friends and family about the dangers of too much processed food.  If you don’t understand the label, put it back.
  4. Start backyard and community gardens
  5. Withdraw our support from companies that produce the toxic foods on our grocery shelves.
  6. Withdraw out support from restaurants that promote toxic food.
  7. Go out and support those businesses that have pledged to clean up their menus and have actually done it.

Those are your marching orders.  Troops get to work cleaning out your pantries and refrigerators.  Dump all the toxic sugar filled, pesticide-ridden foods and step into better health.  We all have to start with our own pantries and letting our voices be heard so that we start winning this war against food.  It happens one battle at a time.  You will be well and age gracefully in the process.

Food As Medicine: The dichotomy of western medicine & basic common sense

Before there was western medicine, we had food as medicine.  Ancient people used the roots, herbs and greens available to alleviate symptoms and cure diseases.  Period.  Fast forward to today and many people have tried to discredit this approach by acting as if the cures for disease can only be found in modern western medicine treatments.  Almost exclusively, this approach will offer you only treatments not cures.  When presented with evidence to the contrary, most western doctors and researchers will say, “Well, we really need to do more research on that before we can definitely state that plants can cure disease.”  Meanwhile, for thousands of years our ancestors have used plants to heal.  And we know which plants!

I address this today because so many of us put our faith and our lives in the hands of western medicine.  Many people won’t even consider alternative approaches to healing.  Their “go to” is always a pill prescribed by a doctor.  Do not be confused by what I’m saying here.  Western medicine has its place, but it’s not the only answer.  The analogy I love using is that of a house fire.  You need the fire department to show up.  They may need to use their axes and there will be smoke and water damage.  When they are done putting out the fire, you may have a structure left.  You then begin the process of rebuilding.  So many times cancer patients are faced with this very scenario.  After rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, they are left with an immune system on life support.  If they survive, they start the difficult process of rebuilding.  I’m always amazed at people who manage to take in all the poison of chemotherapy and survive it.  Some of us are incredibly strong.  Many of us have our faith in God and that pulls us through.

What is the best ways to start rebuilding after you’ve faced death.  Reconnect to source or as the old folk use to say, Get right with God.  Then check your food.  Start eating to live and being sure to get the best nutrition possible every day.  This would be by eating at least 4 cups of organic fruits and vegetables each day.  Limiting the amount of dead flesh you consume.  Eating nuts, grains and seeds that are non-GMO and pesticide free.  As I’ve stated many times here, the cost of organic, clean food is low compared to the horrendous medical bills you pay later.

Have you ever thought about what actually causes cancer or any disease?  I hear people saying, “Well, I just got it.”  No thought given to why their body would start growing cells that won’t die.  No thought given to how they might have contributed to disease with their diets and lifestyle.  No thought.  The first response is run to the doctor and get a treatment or surgery and hope for the best.

What I learned in church was that God helps those who help themselves.  Or as people in new thought say, ‘Treat and move your feet.’  When you’re feeling ill, immediately start purging your diet of processed foods and get back to the basics.  Educate yourself on nutrition and always be open to learning more.  Keep track of the cutting edge research in this area.  If you’re still trying to use outdated advice about food and nutrition, you just placed a huge stumbling block in your path.  And here’s the kicker, please use common sense.

As I’ve said before, common sense is in short supply, but as more people start to wake up, we are seeing people use more common sense when it comes to their health.  Let’s just look at a recent experience I had.  I was in the hospital, told that I had cancer and would need extensive surgery.  911 to the fire department!  I was prayed up and I went in trusting that all would be well.  The cancer was removed and the tissue sent to the lab.  But it wasn’t what the doctor told me it would be.  They were confused because it came back with the wrong cancer markers.  So like a dog with a bone, they proceeded to naw at this thing, trying to find an answer.  What was the source of this cancer?  No one knew.  My own intuition was telling me bad dietary decisions and most importantly extreme STRESS.  You may ask how could that be.  Every week I’m telling you how to guard against bad food and calm down.  I am human.  And sometimes I fall down.  This almost always happens when I’m trying to do too many things in a day and running here and there working to help other people.  I write this blog as much for me as I do it for you.

After surgery, I knew I had to get back on track, but I had one enormous problem.  I was trapped in the hospital.  People joke all the time about hospital food, but it’s no joke when your life is on the line.  To make matters worse, my doctors put me on a clear liquid diet.  This might as well be the kiss of death to a vegetarian or someone who is trying to eat clean, healthy food.  I was literally starving to death while being pumped full of pain killers.  My daily choice was between red, yellow, green or orange jello, beef or chicken broth and pasteurized apple juice.  I was getting sicker by the day because I was being force-fed Go Lightly, the polyethylene glycol mixture that might as well be straight up anti-freeze in my opinion.  My stomach and intestines were on fire.  You would think common sense would kick in at some point and they would determine that I wasn’t doing well with their approach.  This is a blind spot with western medicine.  Many times when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I was the one who called a stop to all of it.  I simply refused anymore drugs.  My sister, seeing my pain, finally snuck I some homemade soup.  I was already planning my escape when my doctor returned from wherever and said I could go home.  Hallelujah!  I went home and started using the knowledge gained from my Native American grandmother.  I used the roots, herbs and supplements I knew would help me heal and recover my immune system.  I switched as much as possible to an alkaline diet.  It took two months to get an appointment with an oncologist.  By then, there were no signs of malignant cancer cells.  They kept looking but to date have found nothing.  I used my food as medicine to heal myself.  I spent time in prayer and meditation each day to calm my mind and spirit.

I am a warrior, but so are you!  When someone tells you there is no other way, search your intuition.  Be still and listen for that small quiet voice of truth.  You will know which way to go.  You may choose chemotherapy or radiation or some other drug treatment.  At least use your food as medicine to help you better cop with the drugs.  No matter your choice, eat to live.

EAT TO LIVE

Some people live to eat.  Is that how you would describe yourself?
How many times a day do you think about what you will eat next?
Are you always anticipating the next meal?
Are you focused on eating “bad” foods, then beating yourself up all day?

Food and eating can be an obsession in this fast paced world. We associate so many things with food and eating. Comfort, identity, emotional connection, stress are all reasons why we eat. What if you could change all that and just Eat To Live?

Eating to live is more about a mindset toward life than following any particular diet. We all have differences. That’s part of what makes life interesting. Seek to constantly move in the direction of life. Seek to eat the freshest, vine ripened fruits and vegetables. Look for grains, seeds and nuts that are organic, meaning they were grown without pesticides in soils free of heavy toxins and metals. I use to say just use your common sense until I realized that not only was it in short supply but there is so much disinformation about food and people are truly confused about what to eat.

Most people instinctively know they should eat fresh foods and avoid pre-packaged processed foods. Many tell me that they eat healthy and don’t eat a lot of processed foods. Then I look at what they’re eating and it tells a different story. It takes a true commitment to health and wellness to wean yourself off the fast fix. Seek to make time for preparing fresh food. Start by making a plan. Write it down on paper, not your phone or iPad. Think through how you will reorient your life to take action around your healthy eating plan.

You’ve heard me go on about how you can eat 4 cups of fruits and vegetables a day to gain optimum health. Most people gasp at this amount. But what are you eating instead? From what I see, lots of red meat, chicken, pork, processed pasta, cheese, potatoes (mostly fried and mashed), and if you’re lucky maybe a cup of other vegetables (fried or cooked with pork or some other meat). Look at your diet and hopefully this is not true.

There’s a lot of room in there for 4 cups of fruits and vegetables. Just the fiber alone will save you money on laxatives. Your cells need fuel to function properly. Just like your car, they will run on almost any kind of junky gas but they really cruise on high octane fuel. Over time the gunk in the bottom of the gas tank starts to gum up the engine much like bad food clogs the arteries and slows down blood flow until one day… BOOM SHAKALAKA… You blow a head gasket, the arteries close up and you go down for the count. Why let this be you?

Eat To Live. Money is not an object here because you will pay either on the front end or deeply on the back end. Fresh food is much more affordable than bypass surgery.

And let’s look at the word of the decade, Cancer. We’ve gotten to a place in the United States of America where it’s no longer a question of if you get cancer but when. Despite all your efforts at leading a balanced life, the deck may seem to be stacked against you. I’ll talk about this more in later blog posts. I know it was a little shocking to me when I went into the hospital emergency thinking I had some kind of nagging infection only to find it was cancer. It’s what I did after that you need to know.

I didn’t buy into the story I was being told about my “scary” future and all the chemotherapy I would need. I did need immediate surgery, but after that I had to decide what I wanted for my immediate and long term future. I trusted my doctors to give me their best advice and to tell me what they had been trained to tell me. They only knew one way. I knew I needed to trust my intuition and be open to the best guidance from within. So I got still and listened. When I got scared and emotionally exhausted, I would get still and listen for the voice within to guide me. People were describing some pretty horrifying therapies and additional surgery they just knew I should have. But my gut was telling me to be still, not get drawn into the story, take immediate action to recover and regenerate healthy cells and make my system an unwelcome place for cancer to hang out. I used the tools I had, a combination of ancient knowledge and modern technology. The results were not surprising to me but my oncologist is still scratching her head. She respected my decision not to have chemotherapy but she was probably more scared than me. My actions were outside her knowledge base but she was curious and hopeful for me.

I chose to Eat To Live. That and my supplementation with roots and herbs helped me create a miracle. Maybe you haven’t gotten the scary cancer diagnosis. Take this time to be still and listen. Listen to your gut. Decide now to Eat To Live so you can enjoy every day of your life. I’m so ecstatic when I wake up in the morning. I give thanks for this every day because it didn’t have to be this way.

Super Bowl Sunday – What Is Tom Brady’s Secret?

Here we are again at the big game day. And it truly is a big game being played today on so many levels.  It’s February Food month here at Janice Woody’s Lifetime Health. 

Now before you freak out and tune me out, I’ve got some great ideas for your Super Bowl party.  There’s still time to include these in your plans.  By the way, some of these are not original with me, but ideas I’ve gotten from some of my students.  They have made the lifestyle change and are thinking about ways to eat healthy and still enjoy the festivities.

How about changing up the food every quarter during the game? 1st quarter, healthy chips and salsa; 2nd quarter, low fat lettuce wraps with either falafel, broiled shrimp or grilled chicken strips with a drizzle of honey ginger dressing; 3rd quarter, organic popcorn with a coating of nutritional yeast; 4th quarter, bring it on home with delicious fruit cups full of fresh fruit slices.  Now that’s not so bad.  Sure beats the hell out of chicken wings and beer all day.

How about throwing your own half-time show with a game of twister?  This is even more hysterical after your guest have had a few drinks.  Oh yeah!  You know there will be a riot if you don’t serve some alcohol, but be mindful of your guests.  Make it light and interesting.  And if you must drink beer, try to find something that’s truly beer and not some mystery chemical brew.  My suggestion is Heineken, but there are other craft varieties that have thoughtfully kept it simple and pure beer.  Do your homework.  And please don’t let anyone drive home if they’ve had too much to drink.

Enjoy the game and keep in mind one of the quarterbacks, Tom Brady, swears by his alkaline diet.  He focuses on fresh organic vegetables and avoids processed sugary food.  He attributes his longevity and quick recovery to his diet and lifestyle.  So guys take a hint from a pro.  He has the results to prove it.
