Comfort Food

Thanksgiving memories for me are of Grandma in the kitchen cooking and baking some of my favorite comfort foods.  They might have been different from what you ate but they were all I knew.  Much of the food was organic because she didn’t use pesticides in her garden or on the fruit trees or the lawn.  This was back before organic was cool.  We didn’t even know we were eating organic but we knew it was good.  Our family was so big, we took shifts at the dining room table on Thanksgiving day.  Family members traveled for miles to get there so we could all be together.  I hope you’re memories are this sweet.  If not, make some new memories starting this year.  Let your comfort food be a blessing to your health.

If you’re having turkey on Thanksgiving, at least strive to get the best possible.  Remember, this is for your family.  Most commercial turkey farms use a variety of drugs as feed additive to “fatten up” the birds.  Topmax is the preferred additive found in most supermarket turkeys.  If you care, there are alternatives to ingesting this stuff.  One would be give the turkey couple in the photo a break and eat something else.  But if you insist, go organic.  Notice the following warning says – NOT FOR USE IN HUMANS.  Yet they feed it to the birds many of us are eating.

WARNING:  The active ingredient in Topmax, ractopamine hydrochloride, is a beta-adrenergic agonist.  Individuals with cardiovascular disease should exercise special caution to avoid exposure.  Not for use in humans.  Keep out of the reach of children.  The Topmax 9 formulation (Type A Medicated Article) poses a low dust potential under usual conditions of handling and mixing.  When mixing and handling Topmax, use protective clothing, impervious gloves, protective eye wear, and a NIOSH-approved dust mask.  Operators should wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.  If accidental eye contact occurs, immediately rinse eyes thoroughly with water.  If irritation persists, seek medical attention.  The material safety data sheet contains more detailed occupational safety information.  To report adverse effects, access medical information, or obtain additional product information, call 1-800-428-4441.

My prayer for you this Thanksgiving week is that you are able to spend it with people you love, enjoying clean, toxic free food and beverages, and truly giving thanks that you’re alive and able to do this.

Hears to your Lifetime Health!
